HHS 3100 Introduction to Social Determinants of Health

[3 credit hours]

This is an introductory course on social determinants of health in the United States. Social determinants of health (SDOH) are the systems, factors, and conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality of life outcomes and risks. We will examine the multiple levels of influence through which these factors contribute to health inequalities and explore innovative solutions in which health professionals may address and reduce health disparities when working towards health equity.

HHS 3600 Foundations of Evidence-Based Practice in Health Science

[3 credit hours]

Introduction to the principles of evidence-based practice. Course content will include how to locate, appraise, and use contemporary evidence to optimize health outcomes and clinical care.

HHS 4100 Foundations of Healthcare Delivery

[3 credit hours]

This course will discuss the evolution of healthcare and teach foundational knowledge and skills to prepare students interested in graduate healthcare programs for patient, client, and healthcare team interactions. Content covered will include an introduction to healthcare delivery systems, frameworks that currently guide healthcare providers, regulatory processes in healthcare, and communication skills to effectively work with patients, clients and other healthcare team members.

HHS 4500 Data Science II

[3 credit hours]

Advanced data science concepts, computer programming to build sophisticated analytic databases using multiple source files, engineering and visualization of large data sets. Application of multivariate analysis using popular programming and analytic software packages to report data findings.

HHS 4800 Health Sciences Capstone I

[3 credit hours]

This course is the first of a two-part capstone project for students graduating with a Bachelor's in Health Sciences. This course is designed to prepare students to assess social determinants of health, and to then plan, promote, implement, and evaluate a program aimed at achieving health equity.

Prerequisites: HHS 1020 with a minimum grade of C and HHS 3100 with a minimum grade of C and HHS 3600 with a minimum grade of C

HHS 4810 Health Sciences Capstone II

[3 credit hours]

This culminative Capstone course will provide students with an opportunity to apply the various competencies developed as part of the Health Science Bachelor's degree curriculum. Students will be assigned to a small group and will demonstrate these skills through the development of a program plan focusing on an assigned health inequity need in the community. Students will work with their small group throughout the semester to develop various deliverables critical in the delivery of health promotion programs.

HHS 4910 HHS Honors Thesis Project

[1-3 credit hours]

The Thesis/Project is a comprehensive effort of original scholarship. Students work closely with a faculty member for two semesters. Students pose a research question, devise and implement a method, report the results, and discuss the findings. An honors project requires a student to develop a question or identify a matter that is addressed by a thorough literature review, an analysis and integration of the literature, and a comprehensive treatment of the problem or matter.
