• 1. Describe the normal oral flora and the host defense mechanisms that act against microbes in the oral cavity.
• 2. Identify the viral, bacteria and fungal agents (their structure, virulence factors and types of infections) that are pathogenic in the oral cavity and the implications of these infections to dentistry.
• 3. Describe strategies for modification of the normal oral flora.
• 4. Describe the pharmacokinetics and the pharmacodynamics of a broad spectrum of medications used in dental pharmacotherapy.
• 5. Discuss the decision making process of safe and effective therapeutic selection for treatment of illness/disease that is based on knowledge of pharmacology and pathophysiology.
• 6. Describe adverse effects, contraindications, and drug interactions of medications used in dental pharmacotherapy.
• 7. Demonstrate the ability to use effective communication and communicative behavior guidance techniques accepted by the American Dental Association (ADA) to achieve cooperation of adults and children in the dental environment. \n
• 8. Identify the cognitive, emotional and social development stages of children, adolescents and adults.
• 9. Demonstrate knowledge of and skill in non-communicative behavior guidance such as protective stabilization, conscious sedation and general anesthesia, and identify which behavior guidance techniques are appropriate in the contemporary management of adults and children in the dental environment.
• 10. Identify and describe the anatomy and development of the head and neck, particularly the oral cavity and face, and be able to predict the results of abnormal development of these structures.
• 11. Describe the current and classic literature for diagnosis and treatment planning, prevention, restorative dentistry, pulp therapy and trauma.
• 12. Describe the components of good research, and critically evaluate the literature for quality and substance.
• 13. Describe the components of orthodontic records, and the importance of cephalometric and facial esthetic evaluation in the diagnosis of orthodontic/orthopedic abnormalities.
• 14. Assess patients in the skeletal, dental, functional and esthetic domains and identify those interceptive orthodontic cases that are appropriate for treatment.
• 15. Describe in detail the preparation and management of medical emergencies in the dental setting, including those related to sedation.
• 16. Describe the indications, contraindications, and protocols for medically and physically compromised patients.
• 17. Describe acquired, developmental and genetic disorders commonly found in the pediatric population and later seen in adults and then developing proper differential diagnoses and appropriate management. \n
• 18. Appropriately diagnose and manage injuries to the oral cavity, including major trauma and appropriate referrals to medical colleagues as determined by the extent of the patients deficit or condition.
