BS in Recreational Therapy

Students wishing to major in the recreational therapy program complete a pre-professional course sequence their freshman and sophomore years consisting of undergraduate core curriculum courses, pre-recreational therapy curriculum courses and recreational therapy support courses. Upon acceptance into the professional sequence entering their junior year, students complete 46 credit hours of recreational therapy-specific coursework followed by a 15-credit hour, 560-clock hour internship the summer of their senior year.

  • The University of Toledo Recreational Therapy program prepares competent entry-level recreational therapists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains as evidenced by offering a curriculum that provides students the opportunity to: • integrate a comprehensive understanding of history, service models, theories, philosophies, ethics, credentials, professional conduct, evidence-based practices, and professional development within the field of recreational therapy (RT) practice
  • • develop the ability to independently and effectively screen, assess, and gather comprehensive and accurate data about patients/clients to inform the development of an appropriate course of action through creation of individualized treatment plans that include functional goals, modalities, facilitation techniques, and interventions
  • • explore, experience, and create evidence-based interventions and facilitation techniques to enhance patient/client outcomes, functionality, and independence in activities of choice
  • • develop skills necessary to understand, develop, and conduct evaluation and research to determine the effectiveness of treatment interventions and programs used to reach patient/client outcomes
  • • develop knowledge in the areas of administrative functions necessary in professional practice such as management of staff and volunteers, department oversite, professional advocacy, and professional development
  • • develop a strong foundation for recreational therapy practice through exploration of human anatomy and physiology, understanding of the psychology of human growth and development, abnormal psychology, and healthcare delivery of services
