  • Students can demonstrate understanding of the the main idea and some pieces of information on familiar topics from sentences and series of connected sentences within texts that are spoken, written, or signed.
  • Students can participate in spontaneous spoken, written, or signed conversations on familiar topics, creating sentences and series of sentences to ask and answer a variety of questions.
  • Students can communicate information, make presentations, and express their thoughts about familiar topics, using sentences and a series of connected sentences through spoken, written, or signed language.
  • Students can make comparisons between products and practices to help them understand perspectives.
  • Students can interact at a functional level in some familiar contexts. Japanese Minor students are encouraged to participate in the Study Abroad Program either for one semester or a full year at one of our hosting universities in Japan with an exchange agreement. Through the study abroad experience, students will be able to achieve advanced proficiency in Japanese, such as 1) understanding the main message and supporting details on a wide variety of familiar and general interest topics, 2) maintaining spontaneous spoken, written, or signed conversations and discussions, 3) delivering detailed and organized presentations on familiar as well as unfamiliar topics, 4) being able to explain some diversity among products and practices and how it relates to perspectives, and 5) interacting at a competent level in familiar and some unfamiliar contexts.
