Admission Requirements

First Time STudents applying to engineering science programs

In 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, The University of Toledo implemented test-optional admission.  Students who choose to be considered for admission to any Bachelor of Science program in Engineering (Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering) with standardized test scores must have earned a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or GED average standard score of 510 in the 2002 format or 730 in the 2014 format with a Mathematical Reasoning sub-score of 190 along with a minimum ACT composite score of 22 or SAT combined score of 1110 and a minimum ACT math score of 22 or SAT math score of 550 are also required.

Students who choose to be considered for admission to any Bachelor of Science Program in Engineering (Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering) without standardized test scores require a minimum high school GPA of 3.5 and a B- grade or higher in pre-calculus at the time of consideration.  If a student is currently enrolled in a Pre-Calculus course at the time of consideration, the remainder of their course history will be considered in any admission decision holistically.

All students considered for admission to Bachelor of Science Programs in also must successfully complete a minimum of four years of high school mathematics including a course that covers the topics of trigonometry or pre-calculus.  Additionally, any students applying to the Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, or Environmental Engineering programs must have completed at least one year of high school chemistry. High school physics also is strongly recommended.

Any students who do not meet the minimum requirements for the Engineering Science major in which they apply will be admitted to the Engineering Pre-Major program should they hold a 3.00 HS GPA and have achieved a B or better in Algebra II or their high school’s equivalent course.  If these criteria are not met, students will be admitted to the Exploratory Studies program in University College or can choose to be considered for a major in another program at the University outside of the College of Engineering.

FIRST TIME STUDENTS APPLYING TO ENGINEERING Technology PROGRAMS

To be directly admitted to one of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology programs or information technology program (Computer Science and Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Information Technology, and Mechanical Engineering Technology) first year, full-time students need a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 or GED average standard score of 480 in the 2002 format or 700 in the 2014 format with a Mathematical Reasoning sub-score of 180. A minimum ACT composite score of 21 or SAT combined score of 1070 and a minimum ACT math score of 20 or SAT math score of 510 are also required. In 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, The University of Toledo implemented test-optional admission.  Students without standardized test scores require a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 and a B- grade or higher in algebra.

Any students who do not meet the minimum requirements for Engineering Technology programs listed above will be admitted to the Pre- Major Program in the University College’s Exploratory Studies Program.  This program is designed to provide students with additional services and programs that will assist them in fulfilling their educational goals. Academic Advisors identify the students’ goals at orientation and ensure that Pre-major students register for courses that will align with their desired engineering program at UToledo.

Transfer Students

Transfer students seeking admission to the Bachelor of Science programs in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Mechanical Engineering must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 from all previous college or university work and have college credit equivalent toMATH 1850 and CHEM 1230, with grades of at least a C or higher.

Students transferring into the College of Engineering Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology programs in Computer Science and Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Information Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology must have obtained a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25 from all previous college or university work.  Equivalent credit for MATH 1330 or MATH 1340 with a grade of C or higher is also required for Construction Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology.  Equivalent credit for MATH 1850 or MATH 2450 with a grade of C or higher is also required for Computer Science and Engineering Technology and Electrical Engineering Technology.

Students not admitted to an engineering program may not take engineering courses unless those courses are required for a degree program outside of engineering.

Students transferring from other institutions must earn at least 32 hours of undergraduate credit in residence at The University of Toledo. At least 14 of these must be in the major area. The remaining credit hours are to be in engineering topics or in other areas that satisfy degree requirements.

Full-time students must take their last semester in residence and part-time students must take their last 14 hours in residence unless exceptional arrangements have been made in advance with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies in the College of Engineering.
