To be considered for a Graduate Academic Fresh Start, the student must meet all of the following requirements:

• Be a degree-seeking graduate student
• Have previously enrolled at The University of Toledo
• Have not been enrolled for at least two years prior to current enrollment
  • Exception: Under exceptional circumstances, a student may petition the College of Graduate Studies for a waiver of the two-year requirement
• Demonstrate academic success upon re-enrollment by achieving:
  • A minimum 3.0 graduate GPA during:
    • The first semester of re-enrollment (full-time students), or
    • The first 12 credit hours (part-time students), not to exceed three semesters

Approval Process

The petition must be: 

• Reviewed and approved through the appropriate academic college channels
• Submitted to the College of Graduate Studies
• Approved by the Vice Provost for Graduate Affairs

Policy Provisions (If Approved)

If the petition is granted, the following conditions apply:

GPA Recalculation

• The policy applies only the cumulative graduate GPA
• Earned credit hours are not affected

Transcript Record

• All grades from prior enrollment will remain on the official transcript
• The policy does not remove or alter the academic record
• Only the GPA calculation is adjusted

Use of Prior Coursework

• Courses from prior graduate enrollment:
  • Cannot be counted toward current degree requirements
  • Are excluded from GPA calculations
• Degree requirements must be met only with coursework included in the recalculated GPA

Important: Approval of this petition results in the permanent forfeiture of the ability to apply excluded coursework toward the current degree. 

Transfer Credit Restriction

• Credit earned at other institutions during the required two-year non-enrollment period is not eligible for transfer credit

One-Time Use

• This option may be exercised only once
• It is not available again, regardless of:
  • Number of re-enrollments
  • Number of graduate programs pursued
