AED 3500 Innovations In Art Education

[3 credit hours]

An introduction to new directions in secondary art education. Current views of philosophy and psychology are explored as the rationale for contemporary curricula in art education. This course has a prerequisite of an upper division score of 1 and is a corequisite with AED 3510 Art Education Practicum: Secondary.

AED 3510 Art Education Practicum: Secondary

This practicum is a supervised opportunity for students to gain experience in the classroom and other settings that provide instruction to children to students in a Secondary environment (Grades 6-12). The course assists students in acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills needed to function as an art educator in a changing and diverse society through the act of observing and assisting a mentor teacher assigned by the University, and focuses on lesson plan implementation, differentiated instruction, behavior management strategies and assessment of student learning in their practicums. Furthermore, field activities assist students in understanding learners and the learning processes; gaining experience using instructional technology necessary for professional practice; and working effectively in both professional and community roles. This course has a prerequisite of an upper division score of 1.

Field placement in an elementary school setting allowing the undergraduate student, with art teacher approval, to develop a course of study that will satisfy the special needs of the student in art education.

This seminar is designed to enhance the student teacher's final preparation for employment. Professional issues, ethical behavior, interview techniques and other processes and concerns involved in entry into the profession will be examined.
